This past Saturday "Squire Bob" and I journeyed to Fresno to check out and visit with Clif Bassett and his Azure Knights group again. They are trying out some new lances made with balsa wood tips, which shatter far more spectacularly (and more easily, too!) than the old pine or fir dowels that have been "pre-stressed" to shatter on impact. The new balsa lances worked beautifully, at least to my eye, and reports are that it's not as hard on the recipient of the blow to boot. Clif of course won, but was given a good run for his money by his opponents. All in all it was a great show.
Our original intention for this trip had been to bring the horses down with us and get them exposed to the noise and tumult of the joust. We weren't going to actually take part of course, but just sit tight and let the horses absorb the experience, as it were. But life got in the way, and thus it became a choice between going through with the original plan, or leaving the horses home and taking a job that evening. The lure of filthy lucre was a siren song though, so the ponies stayed home... for which I'm sure they were just as happy! But it was tough to have to STAND there and watch other people riding around and doing the things that I had been looking forward to enjoying that day. Oh well, Life happens!
We also were there to do some "recruiting" or at least answering questions for people concering our upcoming "Renaissance School of the Soldier", and hopefully gained some new faces for it. For more information check out our St. Adrian's page.(this post is actually by Gordon, Neb just posted the pics)
